What can a retired IT programmer and a retired teacher do to impact climate change and their carbon footprint? The answer is everything possible! We started out 8 years ago looking for a way to change our life style and educate the public about climate change and what ordinary people can do to reduce our impacts on global warming.
We took a 45 year old 2/4 stick frame house and retrofitted it with energy efficient materials and added solar pv and solar thermal to make it a near net zero home. In the process we learned about how a home is like an organism that the residents interact with to make run more efficiently and about the potential of trapped pollutants like radon and moisture that can result from such improvements.
A committment to reduce your carbon footprint doesn't stop at your front door! We have been involved in promoting renewable energy use and sustainable living by forming a group to encourage community solar development in the area we live. In addition, our involvement with local and regional energy and civic groups have lead to increased awareness through solar home tours and a campaign to stencil storm drains.
As we continue our efforts we are working hard on educating ourselves and our community about the benefits of a healthy and efficient lifestyle.
